One of the commanders of the frigate Hetman Sahaydachniy (flagship of the Ukrainian Navy), led of the joint Ukrainian-American Sea Breeze exercises. His colleagues rated him as a capable officer with pro-Western convictions. On the eve of the Russian occupation of Crimea, he was Deputy Commander of the Ukrainian Navy responsible for combat training. On 03/01/2014, he was appointed the commander of the Navy, replacing the acting commander Sergiy Yeliseyev, who withdrew from his duties the day before. On 03/02/2014, Berezovsky defected, siding with the Russian invaders, and was unlawfully appointed by Sergey Aksyonov to the position of the "Commander of the ARC Navy". He would personally try to persuade the Ukrainian officers to break their oath. On 04/20/2014, he was appointed deputy commander of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation.
