The strategic formation of the Russian Navy in the Black Sea. After the partition of the former Black Sea Fleet of the USSR in 1992-1997, part of the Russian fleet remained in Crimea on the terms of the lease of the land and facilities. The conditions for the stay and the operation of the fleet in Ukraine were regulated by the Ukrainian-Russian status of forces agreements (SOFA). The command is stationed in Sevastopol. By 2014, the forces of the Black Sea Fleet had powerful coastal and naval components and, contrary to the SOFA agreements, were involved in the occupation of Crimea.
