We did what we could, to the best of our ability

When Germany attacked the USSR in 1941, the Soviet naval aviation met the enemy with dignity. Moreover, it participated in the first air battles, even bombed Berlin. Naval pilots became the first Heroes of the USSR in the war. They managed not to lose the fighting capability of their equipment when others were destroyed at the airfields.

Even after the collapse of the USSR, the naval aviation of Ukraine and the Russian Federation still shared a significant amount of common history. Novofedorivka played a prominent role therein, although it appeared relatively recently on the administrative map. This is the official name of the village in the western part of the Crimean Peninsula since 1992. It is known for its air base on the seashore, which actually develops into a settlement. The city of Saki is located 7 km away, so the military unit was named after this toponym.

An airfield for training purposes was built here back in the 1930s, with the prospects of establishing the Saki airbase. The airfield was renovated during the Nazi occupation. In the 1970s arms race, the scientific and training complex «NYTKA» for the pilots of Soviet aircraft carriers began to be built here. The components of the complex structure, like the aircraft cruisers themselves, were manufactured in Mykolaiv. At the end of 1997, Ukraine and the Russian Federation agreed to jointly use the training ground, but in 2008 these agreements were temporarily suspended due to the Russian invasion of Sakartvelo. In 2014, the Russians came to seize Crimea as well, although most of the agreements on the Black Sea Fleet were valid and even prolonged by pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych. The naval aviation base in Novofedorivka came under the full control of the Russian Federation at the end of March.

The title of the Hero is still awarded as the highest state award both in Ukraine and in Russia. Military pilots still receive Gold Stars in both countries, but under very different circumstances.

In Kyiv, on May 11, 2022, Colonel Ihor Bedzai was posthumously awarded the title of the Hero of Ukraine. He managed to continue the work of several generations of Ukrainian naval pilots with dignity. He was the head of the flight safety service – a senior inspector-pilot of the Command of the Military Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

In 2014, in Novofedorivka, he managed to timely recognize Russian aggressive intentions and redeploy the military equipment of the 10th Saki Naval Aviation Brigade of the Navy to the mainland. The 1st-class combat pilot continued his service in Mykolaiv. Later, he received a promotion in Odesa. He accumulated around 2,000 flight hours. He performed the most difficult combat tasks during the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Ihor Bedzai died while performing one of his combat missions. A young specialist who had just become a father was supposed to be the pilot. Bedzai also rarely saw his family during the full-scale war. He was aware of the risk and decided to replace the pilot. That flight on May 7, 2022, had a search and rescue mission, five Ukrainian military serviceman were on board. Despite the fact that the white helicopter was unarmed, it became the target of a Russian Su-30 near the Danube Delta. Ihor Bedzai skillfully evaded two shots from the fighter jet. As he promised in numerous interviews, he did everything he could until the end. The lives of all the crewmembers of the Mi-14 were taken by an R-73 guided missile launched by the enemy.

At the beginning of July 2022, after lengthy battles over Zmiinyi Island, the Ukrainian flag was raised there. However, even at the end of July, the Moscow authorities awarded the title of Hero of Russia for the alleged «disruption of Ukrainian intentions to seize the island». Ilya Syzov then received his «Golden Star». He is a participant in the invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, the deputy commander of the 23rd Assault Aviation Regiment from the Khabarovsk region. Syzov is quite a public person, he is proud of his participation in punitive operations in Syria, and his «dynastic» inclination to military affairs. According to Syzov himself, he was the one who targeted the Ukrainian Mi-14 in May 2022. He considers the killing of Ihor Bedzai and the entire rescue crew a heroic act.

Code word «Let's go»

People have heard a lot about the heroic deeds of the military in Novofedorivka at different times. Local operations were often classified as «top secret». The village has been in the center of international attention several times.

The secret operation «Argonaut» is connected with Novofedorivka. Its primary purpose was to ensure air safety for the «landing strip facility in Saki, Crimea for planes transporting British and American delegates to the Conference of the three states in Yalta». In February 1945, distinguished guests of the Yalta/Crimea Conference – Winston Churchill and Franklin Rooseveltwere welcomed and escorted here. These were 252 aircrafts of at least nine different types. Numerous delegations of diplomats, journalists, advisers, even daughters of world leaders – all of them traveled to Yalta through Novofedorivka. The first to arrive and the last to leave the conference was the Group Captain of the Royal Air Force Walter J. Pickard, the commander of the operation. In his homeland, the two-month work of Pickard would be called a heroic deed. Then his team overcame the harsh weather conditions, administrative and communication problems that were «always inherent to Russia». Despite multiple agreements, his planes were even attacked by Soviet fighter jets.

In February-March 2014, Ihor Bedzai also made a historic decision in Novofedorivka. He had just been put in charge of the unit. The previous brigade commander, Colonel Volodymyr Khomenko, died at the beginning of March 2014. Under the threat of Russian occupation, his deputy for flight training planned a secret operation.

Bedzai began his career in naval aviation in 1993, having just graduated from the Syzran Higher Military Aviation School. At that time, the history of naval aviation of independent Ukraine had just began. On February 22, 1992, the 555th Naval Helicopter Regiment in Ochakiv was the first to take the oath of allegiance to the people of Ukraine. On March 16, 1992, the commander of the 299th Shipborne Aviation Regiment in Novofedorivka was the first in his regiment to take the same oath. On April 10, 1992, the 1063rd Center for the Combat Use of Naval Aviation in Saki also swore allegiance to Ukraine. In the 1990s, despite pressure and blackmail, the military chose to serve the independent Ukraine, but they were often left without equipment and weapons. The majority was appropriated by the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation.

Bedzai could choose between service in Ukraine and the Russian Federation. He chose Ochakiv, next to his native Mykolaiv region. Later, he served in Novofedorivka for almost 10 years starting from 2004. He remembered the lessons of the distribution of military property together with the Russians from the 1990s.

Russian troops arrived in Novofedorivka on February 27, 2014. The military unit was blocked so that «the Tatar population does not take possession of weapons and attack the Russian-speaking population of the village». Part of the local population – from the marginalized groups to teachers and entrepreneurs – believed in this tale of Russian propaganda. It was quite difficult to recognize Russian aggression and understand its hybrid methods. Even those who dared to resist sometimes thought that in the near future they would be mostly threatened by the «united Crimean forces» and not by the actual Russian occupation. This can be clearly heard in the video, the operator of which films and comments the withdrawal of the Ukrainian air group from Novofedorivka.

Only a limited number of personnel were aware of the decision for immediate and secret relocation of aviation equipment to the mainland. They even had to be informed additionally about the start of the operation. The Ukrainian soldiers, surrounded by the Russian military, were waiting for a moment when the Russians would let their guard down, when the air and sea would be relatively safe for an aircraft to fly. They calculated the route over the sea so that neither the «Moskva» cruiser nor the anti-aircraft missile systems «Buk» in Yevpatoria would interfere.

«Let's go» was the code word for that day. 15 minutes was enough for Ukrainian pilots to get started. Helicopters took off from parking lots to reduce takeoff time. The altitudes and flight modes of the Ukrainian planes prevented the Russian air defense forces from countering them effectively. The crews were ordered to head out to sea at maximum speed and reach the 12-mile zone of neutral waters, where interception was illegal. On March 3, 2014, the crews managed to save two An-26s, three Mi-14s, one Be-12, and one Ka-27. The Saki aviation group eventually successfully reached Mykolaiv. Even at the Kulbakyne air base, no one knew about the secret operation.

Bedzai and his team members received many anonymous threats, messages and phone calls that March. One of them asked if the planes would return to the base. The acting commander assured that they would return, but not today. Four days later, another Ka-27PS assigned to the flagship «Hetman Sagaidachnyi» was successfully redeployed.

On March 9, 2014, Russian troops seized the airfield with the support of Mi-35M helicopters. Despite constant pressure, part of the personnel of the 10th Sevastopol Naval Aviation Brigade remained loyal to Ukraine even after the so-called «referendum» and the illegal decision of the Russian Federation «on the admission to the Russian Federation of the Republic of Crimea and the formation in the Russian Federation of new subjects - the Republic of Crimea and the city of federal importance of Sevastopol». The military unit was planned to be seized several times, including on March 19, 2014. However, Bedzai joked with another anonymous caller that they should not spoil the birthday of his 8-year-old daughter.

The Saki aviation brigade became an integral part of the community due to its stationing in Crimea for many years. There are many news stories and other testimonies where residents of Novofedorivka celebrate holidays with the military, thank them for their help in emergency situations. However, on March 22, 2014, local residents joined the assault on the military unit. The brigade was pelted with smoke grenades. The weapons were deposited in warehouses before the beginning of those events. The Ukrainian military spent half a day under siege, but even after the assault, the personnel gathered together and sang the national anthem of Ukraine.

They continued their service in Mykolaiv and Ochakiv. The base of the 10th Naval Aviation Brigade of the Military Naval Forces of Ukraine in Novofedorivka was illegally occupied by the 43rd Separate Naval Assault Aviation Regiment of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation.

«Mommy, we gotta get out of here»

Having seized the peninsula, the Russian side continued to violate even specific agreements. Thus, the first loss among the personnel of Ihor Bedzai's brigade happened already on April 6, 2014. On that day, a Russian contractor, junior sergeant Yevhen Zaitsev, killed the head of the operational department of the staff of the brigade, Major Stanislav Karachevskyi, with two close-range shots from an assault rifle. He was packing his things to leave the officer's dormitory and came to say goodbye to the airfield.

The traitors of Ukraine in the Crimea faced the superior attitude of the Russian military; they were even kept separately while lining up. Those who had served in the Russian Black Sea Fleet before the occupation lost some of their benefits. Now, according to the Russian government, they did not serve on the territory of another state, so they did not receive additional financial allowances.

The new «masters» of the military base in Novofedorivka were often negligent in carrying out their duties. In 2017, two Russian servicemen accidentally launched a guided X-29TD missile on the airfield. Due to this incident, two missiles were written off, as well as special equipment for checking their combat capability, and the hangar was seriously damaged.

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, Russian naval aviation takes an active part in hostilities; Crimean airfields are used as bases from which Russia launches airstrikes on Ukrainian regions. Saki has become one of the key staging grounds for such crimes.

On March 5, 2022, a Ukrainian soldier managed to shoot down Russian Su-30SM from Novofedorivka in the Mykolaiv region, which particularly suffered from aerial attacks. This and similar incidents received wide response. The captured pilots and their navigators were interviewed several times, and they held a large press conference. 32-year-old Major Oleksii Holovenskyi of the 43rd Naval Aviation Regiment also agreed to publicly the share information, including about the life of his unit in Novofedorivka.

According to the commander of the aviation squadron of military unit 59882, he carried out seven combat flights since February 24, 2022. The main functions of the 43rd Aviation Regiment are the control and patrolling of the Black Sea waters, radio-technical reconnaissance, and, if necessary, the identification of targets. Odesa, Mykolaiv, Ochakiv, and Kherson became important targets for his regiment. Those present at the press center in Kyiv were impressed by the fact that Holovenskyi has close family ties to Ukraine. His mother still lives in Poltava region.

All flights were carried out safely, nobody was worried about anything because our leadership constantly told us that Ukraine was weak in air defense, that everything was old, that nothing worked, so fly, invade and fear nothing

— Oleksii Holovenskyi, who was shot down and captured, at the press conference on March 11, 2022.

On August 9, 2022, a series of powerful explosions rocked the military airfield in Novofedorivka. For several hours, residents and guests of the temporarily occupied village, as well as adjacent tourist areas, observed the aftermath of the destruction of Russian military equipment.

Vacationers left personal belongings in hotels and got out of the peninsula in a hurry. The next day, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported additional 9 enemy aircrafts to be destroyed. However, experts consider this number to be significantly underestimated. It was not possible to accurately calculate the losses of personnel of the Russian naval aviation based only on satellite images. Given the specifics of the 43rd Aviation Regiment, these were the officer corps of the invading army.

P.S.

In June 2022, Volodymyr Zelenskyi awards the 10th Naval Aviation Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the name of Hero of Ukraine Colonel Ihor Bedzai. The unique brigade still successfully performs tasks in the maritime sector.

Within six months after the airstrike on the Saki airbase of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, a Russian travel blogger shows the still-closed entertainment facilities and polluted coastline of the temporarily occupied Novofedorivka.

The August footage of Russians fleeing the Crimean beaches becomes viral on the Internet and inspires Ukrainians for further struggle and creative projects. Sound producer Ihor Habaraev/FRSHMND records a popular track using the voice of a Russian woman from one of these videos as a basis. Shocked by the clouds of smoke in the distance, she, unlike Major Holovenskyi, still remembers her mother – she calls her to urgently leave Crimea: «Mommy, my dear mommy, let's go! We gotta get out of here! We need to leave, this is already some kind of trash! Your wooden house won't do us any good! It's not too late yet, maaaaaamaaaaa!».
